Industry Spotlight: Healthcare

Genesee County has a robust healthcare industry with three major hospitals, numerous outpatient care centers and clinics, private medical practices and specialty clinics, and other employment opportunities. Major hospitals in the area include Ascension Genesys Hospital, Hurley Medical Center, and McLaren Flint.

Hurley Medical Center is at the heart of the healthcare industry in Flint and Genesee County as the region’s only level-one trauma center. The local hospital is known for its neonatal intensive care unit, pediatric intensive care unit, pediatric trauma center, and burn center, among other top-tier services. Hurley is also a premier public teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Michigan, Michigan State University, the University of Michigan-Flint, and Mott Community College.

Hurley is a community built through the staff, services, and care provided at its main hospital near downtown Flint and at the outpatient clinics throughout the county.

“Our friends, family, and neighbors come here,” says Summer Jenkins, human resources at Hurley Medical Center. “Other members of the community become our family by coming here.”

By working at Hurley, individuals are immersed in the vibrancy of downtown Flint, a city known for its resiliency and community-oriented mindset. A value that is engrained at Hurley.

“If you are looking for an employer that is known as a trusted community resource and where your efforts truly make a difference in people’s lives, this is it,” says Jenkins.

In addition to traditional medical roles such as doctors, nurses, and technicians, Hurley also hires ancillary staff such as nursing assistants, health unit coordinators, cleaning staff, and registration.

“Even if you don’t have a healthcare background but want a foot in the door, we have a job for you,” says Jenkins. “Once you’re in, we love nothing more than to grow our own.”

This is why Hurley provides tuition reimbursement for a majority of full-time staff. The institution also provides employees with a service that helps them and their families find assistance in higher education. Additionally, those who work for Hurley can take advantage of the Public Service Loan Forgiveness – which forgives the remaining balance of direct loans after you’ve made 120 qualifying payments under an accepted repayment plan and work full-time for an eligible employer.

The healthcare industry in Genesee County offers many career opportunities for those passionate about making a difference. It is a great place to start for anyone in the industry or looking to enter it.
