Jashell Mitchell-Cross came back to Genesee County for her family. When she moved back to Flint, her now husband worked for the State of Michigan, so finding a career back in this area was important to her.  

“My husband and I lived separately, and it took us a while to manage that long-distance relationship, which was tough,” says Jashell. “We were planning our wedding and I was putting feelers out that I was coming back to the area. I applied at the Foundation and, now, here I am.” 

Jashell is referring to the Community Foundation of Greater Flint, where she now serves as a development officer – a change from her previous work at Jackson State University, where she served as Chief of Staff for Football Operations. There, she worked closely with student athletes. Now, she is on the fundraising side of the house, working with donors instead.  

“I’ve always been a community-focused person,” says Jashell. “It’s been all hands on deck, getting to know different organizations in the community and the work that they do.” 

Meanwhile, she is settling in being back home. Outside of her day job, she works with Keep Genesee County Beautiful, where her family has adopted Iroquois Park in Flint and helps support events in the park, such as Levels Fitness and flag football games.  

She also likes going to the Flint Farmers’ Market in downtown Flint and getting something from Tee’s Plentiful Salads. She and her husband can be found at The Roadhouse Bar shooting pool, or having some food and fun at On the Bricks in downtown Flint.  

When she sees her future in Flint, she sees great possibilities. She enjoys being around people who desire better communities and want to be part of the change.  

“Genesee County has that spark,” says Jashell. “We just need some traffic and the boots on the ground to make it happen.” 

Her advice for others who want to see the possibilities in Flint & Genesee? Get involved, be intentional, learn who is doing what, and if something you want to see doesn’t exist, create it.
