Working for Flint Community Schools

Flint Community Schools is just that, a community. It’s a district where people work together for the benefit of the students that they serve. According to Tyra Stowe, shared-time assistant director of human resources for Genesee Intermediate School District and Flint Community Schools, there is something unique about working there.

“The bond that you make with these students is so much more exponential,” says Stowe. “The community here is dedicated to these kiddos; they care so much.”

As the only intercity school district in Genesee County, Flint Community Schools sees a variety of students at its high school, middle school, and seven elementary schools. And with a community mindset, teachers and staff at the schools are team-oriented and work together for the success of their students.

“We have academic teams in place at all schools that help create plans to help students be successful and people in place to help them succeed,” says Stowe. “There are more seasoned teachers that will assist and mentor new teachers. No one wants to see anyone struggling.”

Along with the team mentality, Flint Community Schools offers professional development and top-notch administrative support. Superintendents on-site at schools continuously look at how to improve, and a new Chief Innovation Officer supports teachers with new ideas for the success of Flint students.

Currently, Flint Community Schools is looking to hire teachers and ancillary staff in various disciplines, including English language arts, science, physical education, special education, speech language pathologists, and school psychologists. To help find qualified teachers and staff, the school is offering a $10,000 sign-on bonus on top of the annual salary paid throughout the first year, for those who stay for the year.

Although a financial bonus can be a perk when looking for a place to work, there is more to working for Flint Community Schools, according to Jenayl Miller, human resources recruiter.

“When I’ve talked to people about why they’re attracted to working in Flint, they say it’s because they want to make a difference in the community,” says Miller. “People do this because they want to make a difference in our students’ live.s”
